The new HBO comedy series starring Danny McBride, Red from Pineapple Express, premieres this Sunday. The show has a lot of positive hype with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay on board as executive producers.
McBride plays Kenny Powers, a washed up major league pitcher resigned to teaching gym class in the town he grew up in. He says things like “time to get my fuck on” and “get your fat fuck kid away from my jet ski” or something similar to that, and it’s pretty hilarious because you can feel the real frustration he experiences.
We’ve seen other reviews of Eastbound and Down that refer to the show, based on the premiere episode alone, as a “totally obnoxious dude comedy.” I do understand that perspective, but with a concept that centers on a drunk, has-been MLB bad ass, isn’t “totally obnoxious dude comedy” about as right-on a formula as possible?
The show has a mildly strong supporting cast, including the announcer from Ferrell’s Semi-Pro, “Whoa, nobody called anybody a JT!”
If you have HBO, Eastbound and Down is worth checking out. It might be formulaic Ferrell, but after one episode we can’t rule that verdict yet. And who cares if McBride’s Powers fails to make any sort of redeeming transgressions? this show will still probably be more entertaining than 90% of the rubbage sitcoms on TV.
