Review by Al Todorovic
This movie was very boring.
The plan is to rewrite a directive, Operation Valkyrie, to decommission the SS is Hitler dies. Benefiting second party politicians and military leaders who had lost power to the Nazis.
Stone Soup, Mena Stroga, is a good comparison. Tom Cruise wants to kill Hitler and all he has is a rock. So, he talks to a radio operator with some carrots, a telephone operator with some potatoes, a colonel with a reserve army and a field marshall with access to the Wolf’s Lair. It’s the same song on repeat for most of the movie.
Two-thirds in they initiate Operation Valkyrie. They’re coup picks up steam then is shut down attempting to arrest Goebbels.
The film was made by the Director of The Usual Suspects, another movie about icy characters and byzantine scheming. Everyone liked that movie because of the twist ending, this movie couldn’t have one. But it could have used more heart. None of the characters had much family interaction, there wasn’t much to make the audience feel attached.
As a history lesson it’s okay. I won’t buy this one on DVD.
